In 1895 Domenico Giuseppe Paino sailed from the Italian island of Salina to Naples with 7 barrels of wine.
Once the wine was gone, he just kept going…for 12 years. First to Australia, then San Francisco, finally arriving in Malden Massachusetts.
Few know why he stopped in Malden. Perhaps it was the Red Sox, or his proclivity to dunk cookies in his coffee. It certainly couldn’t have been the weather.
Year’s later his sons returned to California to carry on Domenico’s grape growing legacy.
Rancho Salina lies in the mountains above the town of Sonoma along the Mayacamas range.
It is names for the little volcanic island from which our journey began.
